Because her father was a Coast Guard officer who was transferred frequently, Barbara lived in numerous places as a youth, including Staten Island, New York; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Port Angeles and Seattle, Washington; Juneau, Alaska; Port Townsend, Washington; St. Petersburg, Florida; and the Waylyn Community of what is now North Charleston  

 

After her father’s retirement from the Coast Guard, the family moved to a farm outside Gaffney, South Carolina.  Barbara graduated from high school in Gaffney, received her bachelor’s degree from Limestone College in Gaffney and later obtained an MS degree in Library Science from the University of South Carolina.  

 

Following their marriage, Barbara and Bill lived in several places, including St. Simons Island, Georgia; Gainesville, Florida; and Chattanooga, Tennessee.  She held a number of jobs, including high-school biology teacher in Brunswick, Georgia; research assistant with both the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources’ laboratory at Fort Johnson and the South Atlantic Fisheries Management Council in Charleston; and, until her retirement, was a reference librarian at Charleston Southern University.

 

Barbara read a lot and was very knowledgeable in many areas, including medical and world affairs.  She lived a long, good life, and was a very accepting person, welcoming others with her warm heart, friendliness, and genuine interest in helping them.

• Son: William D. Anderson III (Billy), Charleston, South Carolina

• Daughter: Elizabeth Sarratt Anderson (Beth), Epidemiologist, Oakland, California

• Granddaughter: Rebecca Anne Durst (Rebecca), Freelance Copy Editor, Summerville, South Carolina

• Great Granddaughter:  Juliette Thérèse Durst (Juliette), Summerville, South Carolina

• Grandson: William Sarratt Anderson (William), Assistant Solicitor, York County, South Carolina

• Granddaughter: Mary Elizabeth Anderson (Mary Beth), Student, University of South Carolina

• Grandson: Robert Zachary Anderson (Robert), Student, Clemson University

• Granddaughter: Savannah Elise Johnson (Savannah), Student, Oakland, California 

• Brother: Robert R. Sarratt (Rob), Colonel, US Army Retired, Manassas, Virginia
